The print Untitled #1 from my new series Gravity was selected for inclusion in this year's benefit auction, and was even used on the back cover of the catalog! I am so happy to have seen it off to it's new home in a fantastic collection, and for way over the listed price!

Cyanotype Workshop at The Image Flow

In October we had another fun workshop at The Image Flow, spending three days delving into printing and toning cyanotype prints. Look for another cyanotype workshop to be offered in 2018!

The Polaroid Project

The Polaroid Project

I am thrilled to be included in The Polaroid Project international traveling exhibition and accompanying book, published by University of California Press, with my piece "The Red Balloon, 1981."

The Polaroid Project

Published to accompany a major traveling exhibition, The Polaroid Project is a creative exploration of the relationship between Polaroid’s many technological innovations and the art that was created with their help. Richly designed with over 300 illustrations, this impressive volume showcases not only the myriad and often idiosyncratic approaches taken by such photographers as Ansel Adams, Robert Mapplethorpe, Ellen Carey, and Chuck Close, but also a fascinating selection of the technical objects and artifacts that speak to the sheer ingenuity that lay behind the art. With essays by the exhibition’s curators and leading photographic writers and historians, The Polaroid Project provides a unique perspective on the Polaroid phenomenon—a technology, an art form, a convergence of both—and its enduring cultural legacy.”

Contributors: William A. Ewing, Barbara P. Hitchcock, Deborah G. Douglas, Gary Van Zante, Rebekka Reuter, Christopher Bonanos, Todd Brandow, Peter Buse, Dennis Jelonnek, and John Rohrbach.

Exhibition dates:
Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth: June 3–September 3, 2017
WestLicht Museum of Photography, Vienna: December 5, 2017–March 4, 2018

PHOTOLUCIDA!

For the second time I have attended Photolucida in Portland, OR. It was wonderful to get so much great feedback from both reviewers and fellow photographers. The festival is run really well and The Benson Hotel is a perfect venue. Thank you to all the Photolucida staff and the many volunteers who help to make it such a wonderful experience. One of my favorite thing about Photolucida is meeting old friends and making new ones. Below some photos.

BLUE AND BEYOND - CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP AT THE IMAGE FLOW

In March Niniane Kelley and myself were conducting a workshop on Cyanotype printing and toning. The venue was The Image Flow located in Mill Valley, CA. We had a fabulous group of six students ranging between the ages of 25 and 89. During two and a half days we covered the making of digital negatives, coating the paper, exposing and toning in a wide variety of toners and bleaches.  A big thank you to all the students for their enthusiastic participation and to the Image Flow for hosting. This is about as good of an environment as it gets!

During the recent CODEX Art Book Fair in Point Richmond, CA, Corden|Potts Gallery was showing my limited edition Artist book "Le Scarpe" and the photogravure portfolio "Feld und Flur".

The book "Le Scarpe" measures 40" x 16" when open and it features twelve images reproduced from the original toned cyanotype prints. It's beautifully bound in red silk fabric with a leather backing by John Demerritt of Emeryville.

If you missed CODEX you can see both at Corden|Potts Gallery in San Francisco.

FotoFest 2016 Auction Catalog

I am pleased to announce that my print "Mezlan" from the series Le Scarpe, which I donated to the FotoFest 2016 Benefit Auction, was purchased by a private collector after heavy bidding, with the final auction price well exceeding the estimate.

The auction sales go directly to support FotoFest art and education programs in Houston and abroad, as well as the Literacy Through Photography year-round education program, operating in over 60 Houston area classrooms this year.

"Le Scarpe"

I have been thinking about creating images with empty shoe boxes which I started collecting about 20 years ago. I have tried many times but was never quite convinced. Last fall I made another effort and I am proud to present 12 large, toned cyanotypes at Corden|Potts Gallery in San Francisco. The show  "Le Scarpe" - Italian for "The Shoes" opens on Thursday, September 3 and will run through October 17, 2015.

Lenscratch

Young Woman with Pink Purse

Aline Smithson, one of my reviewers at photolucida, was intrigued by my ongoing series, "Carry." This past Monday, August 8th, Aline featured my work on lenscratch. This is yet another example of how important it is to attend photo reviews. The connections one makes not only exposes ones work to the art world, it opens up art friendships. Thank you Aline. This is wonderful exposure for my work.

FOUR PHOTOGRAPHERS, LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND

I am happy to be included in a wonderful group show in my hometown Lucerne, Switzerland. Henri Spaeti, owner and curator of the gallery TUTTIARTluzern, selected five images from my ongoing series "Carry". The local newspaper Luzerner Zeitung published the review and they chose one of my images - see below! The show will run through August 22, 2015.

PHOTOLUCIDA

PORTLAND, OR, 4/23 - 4/26

I spent 5 days in Portland showing my work along with 160 other photographers. It was wonderful to meet old friends and make new ones. I was excited and inspired by seeing so much good work.

Nicholas Albrecht

While attending the PhotoAlliance Photo Review in 2012 I met Nicholas. We connected through our mutual appreciation of each others work and the analog format. Nicholas has recently published a wonderful book entitled, One No One and One Hundred Thousand. The images, taken around the Salton Sea, create a powerful story of mystery and overbearing. Nicholas was also recently asked to write a blog for the German online magazine, Der Greif. In this article he mentions our PhotoAlliance connection and eventual friendship. He writes about my Cyanotype series, Blues. His words were very kind about my work and I am grateful for his friendship.
